Top of Tuscany 2024: Top Ratings for 2018 Sangiovese DOCG and Riserva

Montecucco Sangiovese DOCG und DOCG Riserva vor Weinreben auf Tisch

We are delighted that our two 2018 Sangiovese wines Montecucco Sangiovese DOCG and Montecucco Sangiovese DOCG Riserva have once again impressed with their full flavor.

In the renowned “Top of Tuscany” wine tasting, which is organized annually by VINUM, a total of more than 1000 wines were tasted, of which only 100 qualified for the “Top of Tuscany” award.

Our Montecucco Sangiovese DOCG Riserva achieved third place in the “Montecucco DOC and Montecucco Sangiovese DOCG (11 | 2023) INT” category with 93 out of 100 points. This wine is characterized by its light purple color, seductive red berry and violet aromas and a harmonious texture with lively acidity and a fine mineral touch. Its elegance and length make it an exceptional wine.

The Montecucco Sangiovese DOCG also performed remarkably, achieving 91 points. According to the tasting notes, it impresses with its classic bouquet of ripe raspberries and dried roses as well as balsamic notes. Its pleasant texture, balanced acidity and fine-grained tannins lead to a long-lasting stone fruit finish.

Vinoway Selection 2024: Gold Awards for our 2018 Sangiovese

At the Vinoway Awards ceremony on October 21, in addition to our oenologist Dr. Jacopo Vagaggini, two of our popular Otto Ettari wines were honored. 

The 2018 Sangiovese DOCG and the 2018 Sangiovese DOCG Riserva impressed the jury of the largest event in Southern Italy during the “Dinner with the Stars” tasting at the picturesque Castello Monaci with their unique taste. 

We are proud to once again shine with a gold award for the best Italian wines and thank the commission for the event.

Vinoway awards Dr. Jacopo Vagaggini: Best Young Italian enologist 2023

The prestigious Vinoway Awards Commision has named our enologist Dr. Jacopo Vagaggini as the Best Young Italian enologist 2023. We look forward to the awards ceremony on October 21st at Castello Monaci Resort.

Jacopo Vagaggini was born with a passion for wine: His family has been successful enologists for three generations. After a high-level study and a doctorate at Oxford and the University of Bordeaux, he dedicated himself to experimental research, gaining experience in Europe and also in Argentina, before returning to the terroir at the bottom of Monte Amiata to live his own wine philosophy. Together with his father, “Mr. Sangiovese” Paolo Vagaggini, he runs a large laboratory in Siena.

Jacopo Vagaggini strives for the ideal of a modern, elegant wine that respects and cultivates the unique identity of its terroir. We at Otto Ettari are proud and grateful to have enologist Dr. Jacopo Vagaggini accompany us on our journey.

Berlin Gold for our 2018 DOCG Montecucco Sangiovese Riserva

Berliner Wine Trophy: At the winter tasting of one of the most important and largest international wine competitions of the OIV (International Organisation of Vine and Wine), Otto Ettari won gold with the DOCG Montecucco Sangiovese Riserva, vintage 2018.

In a blind tasting by an independent, top-class expert jury, the quality of the wines was judged. The result: Gold for the 2018 DOCG Montecucco Sangiovese Riserva.

Otto Ettari once again awarded gold at MUNDUS VINI

MUNDUS VINI Spring Tasting 2023: The Otto Ettari Montecucco Sangiovese Riserva, 2018 vintage and the Montecucco Sangiovese DOCG, 2018 vintage were also awarded gold in their second participation at the major international wine award of the Meininger Verlag. 

Over six days of tasting, 242 international wine experts judged over 7,500 wines from around the world. We are pleased that our wines convinced with their complexity, acidity and yet time fruity note and won gold.

The mystery of the terroir: the magical border of the Riserva

The impact of the soil on the style of wine can be experienced in an almost magical way, year after year, at Otto Ettari. In fact, the Fornace vineyard has a defined, almost geometric division of the soil, clearly visible to the naked eye at the end of the summer. The east side of the vineyard has dark green foliage, with good vigor and productivity, due to the clayey soils: the resulting grapes are fruity and balanced, ideal for Sangiovese DOCG.

The west side, on the other hand, has more yellowish foliage and less vigor. The soil here is in fact hard and rocky, pushing the roots of the vine to seek moisture in depth and absorb minerals. Smaller, concentrated and very aromatic grapes are produced here, which make the Otto Ettari Riserva so wonderfully smooth and silky.

Before each harvest, Dr. Jacopo Vagaggini, Otto Ettari’s oenologist, establishes this division; the cellar master makes sure that the grapes are harvested accurately.

This uniqueness of the soil and of the harvest produces two wines with distinct personalities but united by the same soul and elegance.

Vinum Top of Tuscany 2021: Otto Ettari Sangiovese Riserva 2016 achievestop ranking.

We are pleased to announce that our Riserva 2016 has been awarded 4th place in the Vinum – Top of Tuscany 2021 with the distinction Best of Montecucco. With 17 out of 20 possible points, the Riserva convinced the jury. “A selection of the best Sangiovese grapes of the estate: exquisite scent of wild berries and lilac; the tannins robust and skilfully placed, spicy-fruity finish.”

Our Sangiovese Montecucco was awarded another top place with 16.5 points.”Blend of a lot of Sangiovese with some Canaiolo: multi-layered aromas of raspberries, violets and liquorice; compact structure with accentuated tannins and acidity, in the finish notes of fresh berries and pepper.”
